Dr. Barbara Sandhöfer, MASt (Cambridge, Physics)
Patent Attorney, European Patent and Trademark Attorney, UPC Representative
Barbara Sandhöfer primarily works in the field of software-based and computer-implemented inventions. Her responsibilities include advising and representing clients in patent prosecution and opposition proceedings, as well as regularly in complex, often international patent litigation. A particular focus lies on infringement and nullity proceedings in telecommunications as well as audio and video coding, especially with regard to SEPs. She regularly appears before the Federal Patent Court and the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Since the beginning of the year, she has been Counsel and heads our Cologne office.
Her academic background includes a solid education in theoretical physics and applied mathematics, culminating in a Master’s degree from the University of Cambridge. She also gained international research experience as a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical chemistry at Princeton University. This combination enables her to quickly grasp complex, mathematically driven technologies and apply them effectively in strategic advisory work and litigation.
In addition, as co-founder of Faccts GmbH—a spin-off of the Max Planck Society in the field of quantum chemical simulation—and a member of its advisory board, Barbara Sandhöfer combines scientific expertise with practical entrepreneurial experience.
